A Romanian construction company running multiple active sites simultaneously. Regulatory compliance with Romanian workplace-safety legislation — particularly hard-hat requirements — is non-negotiable, and enforcement was previously manual.
THE PROBLEM
Manual monitoring didn't scale. Safety officers couldn't watch every worker at every moment. Violations went unnoticed, exposing the company to regulatory fines, project delays, and — most importantly — worker-injury risk.
What they needed: eyes on every camera, all the time, with alerting when something's wrong.
OUR APPROACH
We deployed an AI-powered video recognition system integrated with the client's existing CCTV infrastructure — no new cameras needed. The system works around the clock: PPE-compliance monitoring during construction hours, security monitoring during off-hours.
The detection pipeline runs in two stages: first, person detection identifies workers in each frame; second, PPE classification checks whether each detected worker is wearing a hard hat. Violations trigger real-time alerts to safety officers via their mobile. Everything is logged for the audit trail.
KEY TECHNICAL DECISIONS
- Multi-stage detection (person → PPE classification). Separating the two stages gave higher accuracy than a single-model approach and is easier to tune per site.
- GPU-accelerated cloud inference with edge preprocessing. Edge preprocessing (frame sampling, ROI cropping) reduces bandwidth costs; cloud inference handles the heavy model runs.
- RTSP integration with existing CCTV. No new hardware — we integrate with what the client already runs, which kept the total cost of ownership low.
- GDPR-compliant storage with configurable retention. Frames aren't stored indefinitely; retention windows are per-site configurable to match legal requirements.
- Real-time alerting API + dashboard. Alerts route to the safety officer's mobile; historical violations and trends visible in a dashboard.
RESULTS
